It does start to run a little slow when your civilization starts getting big (on my pII 266 @ 1024 x 768 w/ 16 bit color neways...) but it really is a great game. The slowness doesn't really affect the strategy or gameplay because it's turn based so it doesn't matter anyways. Lokisoft did a really good job porting this game to Linux.
