31 313 1998-12-11 14:47:58 Category: Game-related Utility (yes, you're right. There should be a category for emulators.)
From the SNES Emulation center's Snes9x page:

Snes9x has had a colourful past. Resulting from a merger of two lesser emulators, it dominated the scene with its fantastic features, such as sound and a great GUI. Various platforms had a version and all seemed well for the Snes9x empire. However it was suddenly dropped during a stressed time for SNES emulation. No one really knows why, though at the time all sorts of reasons came to light, such as pressure from Nintendo, rivals groups stealing information, and a general decline in the way the emulation scene was going. So that was that, Snes9x was no more, and we had all lost a great friend.
However, time passed and Snes9x, the once greatest emulator to roam the world, is back. Snes9x has been picked up by some different coders, who do not wish to be known, and is cruising down the road to success. However the situation is still about as clear as mud. The Teach is again involved but he claims he is only a Windows porter, and more importantly other members of the old Snes9x team have been saying that they never really dropped the project at all.
Whatever the case, Snes9x is back, in fine form, and ready to storm the scene once more. However things are different this time round, ZSNES (another SNES emulator), is now the peoples' favorite. It was first with FX support and a whole host of other features, and it will take some real surprises to knock it off the number one spot. Snes9x also supports FX emulation but uses the ZSNES FX engine. To its credit though the newer releases of Snes9x support a couple of neat features, such as advanced sound support.
Snes9x is unique in that it is available of a whole host of platforms, and since it was re-released it is now available for even more platforms, including the Nintendo64, though you will of course need a back-up unit to use it. You can download all these ports below.
Snes9X 1.15 new
