id Software's venerable first true 3d game. |
This is the Linux version of Quake. You'll need to grab the PAK file from the DOS distribution in order to play it. Don't even think of playing it on anything but a Pentium or a really fast 486 (i.e., something faster than mine). There's also a port to SVGAlib which doesn't require X. If you have a 3Dfx accelerator card, check out GL Quake. As for the looks, well, it looks like Quake. If you haven't seen it yet, do so now. The game itself is your basic kill-them-before-they-kill-you scenario. But you'll probably have a lot of fun anyway. |

A great 3D Hockey game |
3D Hockey is a new(and always improving)
OpenGL Hockey game for Linux, other Unices, and Windows. For Linux you can use GTK w/ gtkglarea. It alows you to select from 6 different views (soon to be more). You can play real time or be more of a manager. All in all a great game, if you happen to have a 3D card, or a *fast* chip.

A free, portable 3D engine with a ton of features. |

Crystal Space is currently under heavy development, but it's already quite impressive. The engine supports stencil shadows, lightmaps, shaders, portals, mirrors, scripting, 3D acceleration and lots more. It compiles and runs on GNU/Linux, Windows and MacOS/X.

The Crystal Space project's aim isn't to produce a game, but rather a flexible, portable 3D engine.
|

An arcade game emulator with support for over 2000 games. |

From the Mame FAQ:

"Mame is a arcade machine emulator. Started in 1997, by Nicola Salmoria, mame started out as a series of emulators for individual games. This series of emulators was combined into a
multiple game emulator format. This is the current form of mame, no longer a one man show, there are over 100 contributors to the project."

This is a very, very cool program. ROMs are kind of hard to find at the moment, though, because apparently The Man is cracking down on sites who distribute them. As if Dig Dug still has value outside a nostalgia application like this one.

Mame also supports Glide and OpenGL rendering, and experimental networked multiplayer.

Unfortunately, arcade ROM images are a legal gray area, and therefore difficult to find. However, they are out there if you look hard enough. |
