Another tetris clone with multiplayer and joystick support |
In one-player mode, this looks like just another tetris clone. But the two-player mode (networked via a remote X11 display) has a neat feature: removing a row from your board makes your opponent's board get one smaller! The two boards are both displayed in your window, your opponent's board upside-down in the bottom half. It's pretty neat; it's like a deathmatch tetris. |

id Software's venerable first true 3d game. |
This is the Linux version of Quake. You'll need to grab the PAK file from the DOS distribution in order to play it. Don't even think of playing it on anything but a Pentium or a really fast 486 (i.e., something faster than mine). There's also a port to SVGAlib which doesn't require X. If you have a 3Dfx accelerator card, check out GL Quake. As for the looks, well, it looks like Quake. If you haven't seen it yet, do so now. The game itself is your basic kill-them-before-they-kill-you scenario. But you'll probably have a lot of fun anyway. |

A tetris-like balling blocks game. |
Xemeraldia is a falling blocks game from the FreeBSD camp. Although it looks like Tetris, it's not---and figuring out how to make blocks go away is half the fun. Suffice it to say that it's possible to set up fairly nifty chain reactions where blocks of the same color first get cracked and then collapse into dust.

A real time strategy game similar to Warcraft or Command & Conquer. |
Craft is a strategy/war game similar to Warcraft and Dune II. Each player starts off with two workers and a knight, and tries to build a kingdom with which he can kill off all the other players. The workers can build buildings such as mills (which make archers), docks (for ships), and markets (to trade gold and lumber). The game takes a little while to figure out, but it's worth it. |

Fast action side-scrolling shooter gmae. |
Terroid is a side-scrolling shoot-em-up action game. The graphics are beautiful, albeit hard to see in the tiny 320x200 window. As of version 1.2, the keyboard handling was somewhat unprofessional--- it didn't respond immediately to keypresses. The shareware demo is limited to two levels, but it looks like a lot of fun. |

A decent implementation of the traditional Klondike solitaire game. |
Sol is another version of the traditional Klondike solitaire game for X. Its main feature is a highscore list, where the score reflects how long it took to solve the game. If you're looking for a good game of solitaire, I'd recommend taking a look at <a href="/show?XPat2">XPat2</a>. |

This ravolutionary game allows thousands of players to exist simultanaously in the same fantasy world over the internet. Players can enjoy true social interaction with other participants in real time - form adventuring parties, engage in battles, take on perilous quests, or chat in a tavern over a goblet of virtual wine. <p>
Although I don't play Ultima Online, I'm certain that this is now abandonware, as the file at the download link hasn't been updated since 1999. |

Nestra is a dynamic recompiler which translates 6502 code into native code
to emulate a NES. Execution of the translated code is quite fast, and the
emulator can run at full speed with relatively modest CPU requirements. The current version only support X11 displays, and no sound support. |

A Super Nintendo Entertainment System emulator |
<p>Snes9x is a portable, freeware Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) emulator. It basically allows you to play most games designed for the SNES and Super Famicom Nintendo game systems on your PC or Workstation; which includes some real gems that were only ever released in Japan.</p>
<p>Snes9x is the result of well over three years worth of part-time hacking, coding, recoding, debugging, divorce, etc. (just kidding about the divorce bit). Snes9x is coded in C++, with three assembler CPU emulation cores on the i386 Linux and Windows ports.<br>
Currently there are many ports of Snes9x available, please check the download page to see if a port exists for your system.</p> |
