A very flexible strategy game with multiplayer support. |
Xconq is a hex-based, multiplayer game engine with enough features to simulate good strategic and tactical wargames. There's an extensive game library with sci-fi, fantasy and standard wargames. It currently has no political system, so using the engine to create a true civ-like game wouldn't work, but for straight wargaming it's quite fun. Very good for game designers interested in 2D hex-games. The interface is in the process of switching from Tcl/Tk to SDL with ParaGUI. |

A multiplayer 3d combat game. |
A multi-player 3d combat game where you try to shoot your enemy and the enemy robots while walking around in a virtual world. It's not as fast-paced and engaging as a Doom/Quake deathmatch, and not as much fun as Netmaze. It may call for more strategy and dodging than the others, though, since a major limitation on how fast you can fire is the cooling-off period of your weapon. |

A net-playable version of connect4 for X. |
Connx is a multiplayer implementation of the classic Connect-4 game, where the object is to drop pieces into the gameboard such that four of yours lie in a row; meanwhile, your opponent is doing the same thing. Connx has support for more than two people to play, which might make for an interesting moment or two, but otherwise it's the same as the board game everyone had in their closets as a kid. |

A multiplayer tetris game for X with lots of options |
Xtris is another multiplayer Tetris for X. Its neat feature is that it has bot players so that you don't need a human to play head to head tetris. In fun mode, filling more than one row on your board causes that many random-filled rows to appear at the bottom of your opponent's screen. Filling only one row puts a gray square at the top of your opponent's highest column. There's also a chat feature for talking to your opponent (if you have time to take your hands away from the keys). It's a lot a fun, even playing against the bot. |

A real time strategy game similar to Warcraft or Command & Conquer. |
Craft is a strategy/war game similar to Warcraft and Dune II. Each player starts off with two workers and a knight, and tries to build a kingdom with which he can kill off all the other players. The workers can build buildings such as mills (which make archers), docks (for ships), and markets (to trade gold and lumber). The game takes a little while to figure out, but it's worth it. |

A networked Boulderdash clone. |

Here's a rather good Boulderdash clone, with a net-wide highscore list and even a Java version (I played the X version). It needs to make a network connection to the server in order to retrieve the levels. There's even a teamwork mode which I haven't tried. |

The International Netrek League |
|
A 16-player 2D graphical real-time battle simulation with a Star Trek theme |

Netrek is the probably the first video game which can accurately be described as a "sport." It has more in common with basketball than with arcade games or Quake. Its vast and expanding array of tactics and strategies allows for many different play styles; the best players are the ones who think fastest, not necessarily the ones who twitch most effectively. It can be enjoyed as a twitch game, since the dogfighting system is extremely robust, but the things that really set Netrek apart from other video games are the team and strategic aspects. Team play is dynamic and varied, with roles constantly changing as the game state changes. Strategic play is explored in organized league games; after 6+ years of league play, strategies are still being invented and refined.

(Short and long descriptions are both quoted from the Netrek FAQ.)
