An OpenGL screensaver |
Linux needs more screensavers. People seem to go to great lengths to create cool-looking desktops, but when it comes to screensavers, system resources suddenly become scarce again. Why aren't there loads of funny little GL screensavers for Linux? There's this one OS that has lots of them. Maybe it's just that nobody is aware of the fact that it is really easy to write a small GLUT app and use it as a screensaver, without really knowing how X works.
<p>
Anyway, I wrote one. This screensaver shows a few tumbling objects as seen on some other platform, namely "flowerbox", "spiral", "splash", "pipes" and "explode". It can be launched by xscreensaver(1) and settings are changed interactively. |

An SDL port of XSC, a Star Castle clone |
I took Mark Hanson's "XSC", a clone of the arcade game Star Castle, and ported it from X11 (X-Window) to SDL (the portable Simple DirectMedia Layer library) and added sound effects.
The main purpose was to have a Star Castle game running on the Linux-based Sharp Zaurus PDA. It should be trivial to build ports for other platforms SDL supports (Windows, Mac, BeOS, etc.).

QStat is a command-line program that displays information about Internet game servers. The servers are either down, non-responsive, or running a game. For servers running a game, the server name, map name, current number of players, and response time are displayed. Server rules and player information may also be displayed.

Games supported include Quake, QuakeWorld, Hexen II, Quake II, HexenWorld, Unreal, Half-Life, Sin, Shogo, Tribes, Tribes 2, Quake III: Arena, BFRIS, Kingpin, and Heretic II, Unreal Tournament, Soldier of Fortune, Rogue Spear, Redline, Turok II, Blood 2, Drakan, KISS, Nerf Arena Blast, Rally Master, Terminous, Wheel of Time, Daikatana, Descent 3 and Tribes 2 builds numbered 22075 or higher and also Doom3, Half-Life 2, UT2K3, UT2K4 and more. |

This is an excellent multiplayer action game. It's sort of like a wireframe Maelstrom, only you can play against many other people either on your own or as a team. There's a large variety of goodies like mines, lasers, multiple shots, and cloaking devices. Requires a fast net connection and preferably an accelerated video card. |

<p>Xonotic is a free (GPL), fast-paced first-person shooter that works on Windows, OS X and Linux. The project is geared towards providing addictive arena shooter gameplay which is all spawned and driven by the community itself. Xonotic is a direct successor of the Nexuiz project with years of development between them, and it aims to become the best possible open-source FPS (first-person-shooter) of its kind.
<p>The game is based off the Darkplaces game engine which is originally a quake modification, though it is now far more advanced over the course of many years of development. Because of the features of this engine, Xonotic has incredibly good graphics for an opensource game and is on par with most commercial games from 2006-2007. The gameplay is of course slightly inspired by several other games, but it is essentially a unique mixture of mostly original and different ideas which really makes the game stand out. It could be considered most similar to Unreal Tournament and Quake at its heart, especially regarding teamplay and game mechanics. |

An astroids game for X |
Xoids is another asteroids game for X. It's similar in feel to the original wireframe xasteroids, but with color pixmaps, better animations, and details such as realistically sized asteroids and engines that can overheat. The two-player cooperative mode is interesting: the two ships are linked with an elastic cable, making maneuvering an interesting experience. |

Xodometer is an odometer program that tracks the distance your cursor and your pointing device travel. Sure, it's totally useless, but I think it's pretty cool anyway. The interface could use a little color, though. |

An implementation of Minesweeper for X. |
Xmine is an implementatin of the classic Minesweeper game which looks exactly like the version for that other popular windowing system. The binary, which has Motif statically linked, is a whopping 840k stripped; there's not much bang for the byte here. As minesweeper games go, I think <a href="/show?Xdemineur">Xdemineur</a> is a better deal. |
