id Software's venerable first true 3d game. |
This is the Linux version of Quake. You'll need to grab the PAK file from the DOS distribution in order to play it. Don't even think of playing it on anything but a Pentium or a really fast 486 (i.e., something faster than mine). There's also a port to SVGAlib which doesn't require X. If you have a 3Dfx accelerator card, check out GL Quake. As for the looks, well, it looks like Quake. If you haven't seen it yet, do so now. The game itself is your basic kill-them-before-they-kill-you scenario. But you'll probably have a lot of fun anyway. |

A memory card game based on a Czech TV series. |
Pexeso is a memory/concentration game for children which runs in 640x480 using svgalib. It has multiple sets of cards, including a set based on a Czech TV series Vecernicek, and flags of the world. The artwork is pretty and the interface mostly flawless. You may need to patch it to work with non-Microsoft mice.

The International Netrek League |
|
A 16-player 2D graphical real-time battle simulation with a Star Trek theme |
<p>Netrek is the probably the first video game which can accurately be described as a "sport." It has more in common with basketball than with arcade games or Quake. Its vast and expanding array of tactics and strategies allows for many different play styles; the best players are the ones who think fastest, not necessarily the ones who twitch most effectively. It can be enjoyed as a twitch game, since the dogfighting system is extremely robust, but the things that really set Netrek apart from other video games are the team and strategic aspects. Team play is dynamic and varied, with roles constantly changing as the game state changes. Strategic play is explored in organized league games; after 6+ years of league play, strategies are still being invented and refined.</p>
<p>(Short and long descriptions are both quoted from the Netrek FAQ.)</p>
<p>There are lot of clients available, look at the homepage.</p> |

go AI opponent |
This is an AI opponent for an intense strategy game called "go".
<p>
Unlike chess, which is relatively easy to computerize, programs aren't all that good at go. I consider this a testament to go's rich strategy.
<p>
If you want a really good opponent, check out <a href="/show?cgoban">cgoban</a>, which lets you play humans at go. But if you'd rather practice against a computer first, baduki is a reasonable choice.
<p>
baduki has a GTK+ interface, or you
can play under cgoban with the GMP
protocol.

AI Pengo (Penguin Arcade Game) |
AI Pengo is a Java game featuring a
cute penguin throwing blocks of ice to
kill the ghosts that are trying to
follow him. The game is sort of pac-man
style yet it features great graphics
and nice sound effects .. It runs on
my Netscape 4.61 and with Java Applet
viewer (my version of JDK is 1.1.6)
