<p>Tales of Middle Earth (ToME) is a fantasy adventure game, based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. It is a game that emphasizes intricate, challenging, and varied gameplay over graphics. Hundreds of different monsters in randomly-generated, unpredictable dungeons will strive to slay you by various means, and you counter - if you survive - by developing the skills of your choice and wielding mighty artifacts. ToME's races from Hobbit to Troll and classes from Swordmaster to Summoner allow for many different playing styles and a replay value that extends through years.</p>
<p>The only game so realistic that your scrolls and spell books will burn if you trudge in lava (unless you have gained immunity from some armour), you will dry up rivers to cast mighty spells, strike at orcs with blades attuned to slay them specifically, summon armies from a simple totem, and even forge your own artifacts. There is an entire community to help you with the game, and it is far from static - ToME is a developing game, always improving. And best of all, it's free.</p> |

To make things a little bit more interesting all the weapons, enemies and levels are (de)bug-themed: take out those deadly Segmentation Faults with your Breakpoint-launcher!<br />
The game is viewed from a overhead perspective and controlled using the keyboard and mouse. |

Thousand Parsec is a turn-based 4X strategy game (eXplore, eXpand, eXterminate, eXploit) but it is different in the sense that it is designed for long games supporting universes as large as your computer can handle. (Have a quad Xeon with 4 gig of ram? Well have a couple of million systems in your universe! :). It also supports long term play with players joining and leaving throughout the game. As well the tech tree is easily expandable and can be extended during the game without effecting anybody already playing (ie introduction of new technology as the game progresses).

<p>This game combines some of the very best aspects of such games as Quake III and Unreal Tournament and wraps them up with a retro alien theme, while adding tons of original ideas to make the game quite unique.
<p>The goal of Alien Arena was to create the perfect marriage between Quake and Unreal Tournament, between retro sci-fi and futuristic tech, and between casual gamer and advanced expert, and wrap it up in a package with quality that could rival that of commercial games. The game has a weapon set that is unique and fun, and deviates a bit away from the standard Q3 or UT2k4 weapons. Gameplay can be altered easily in the menu by choosing between the various game types, such as Deathmatch, Team Core Assault, All Out Assault, Capture the Flag, Duel, and Cattle Prod. Users can also apply a number of different mutators to the game rules as well, creating some pretty interesting scenarios.
<p>Using the CRX engine, which is based on the Id GPL source code, Alien Arena includes modern effects such as real time per-pixel lighting and shadows, lensflares, light blooms, reflective water, textured particles, stainmaps, 32 bit color, shaders, fog, weather effects, and much more. The engine has been optimized with each release, and will run very nicely even on older hardware.

id Software's venerable first true 3d game. |
This is the Linux version of Quake. You'll need to grab the PAK file from the DOS distribution in order to play it. Don't even think of playing it on anything but a Pentium or a really fast 486 (i.e., something faster than mine). There's also a port to SVGAlib which doesn't require X. If you have a 3Dfx accelerator card, check out GL Quake. As for the looks, well, it looks like Quake. If you haven't seen it yet, do so now. The game itself is your basic kill-them-before-they-kill-you scenario. But you'll probably have a lot of fun anyway. |

1 - Any of the more popular Linux distributions released in 2010 should work more or less out of the box.
2 - Caution when using an older or low cost CPU, such as Intel Celeron or AMD Sempron.
3 - Integrated graphics, such as the Intel GMA 950, might not work. Low cost video cards may perform worse, or not work at all, even if they are much newer than old cards such as the Radeon 9600 (released 2003). Radeon 9600-9800 should work, X100 and X1000 series should work with the exception of lower end cards. Drivers should be from NVIDIA/ATI to ensure proper functionality. |
