<em>Description:</em> Danger from the deep (aka dangerdeep) is a Free / Open Source World War II german submarine simulation. It is currently available for Linux/i386 and Windows, but since it uses SDL/OpenGL it should be portable to other operating systems or platforms. (If anyone whishes to port it, please contact us.) This game is planned as tactical simulation and will be as realistic as our time and knowledge of physics allows. It's current state is ALPHA, but it is playable. |

We over at <a href="http://lms.d3files.com/">Last Man Standing</a> are excited to annouce
the release of our <a href="http://lms.d3files.com/files.php">first map</a>. Unfortunately it is a
single player map since the SDK hadn't been released
yet so we don't have coop, yet. As a note many of the
beta testers told me that after playing my map they
stopped playing single player doom 3 and only play my
map. In addition, I have never been scared while
watching a movie or playing a game, but I have to say
that in my map at one particular point I got so scared
that I paniced and jumped out the window. To sum it
up, don't play this map if you have any heart
problems, because the map is EXTREMELY thrilling.
Thank you for your time and I hope you enjoy.

<p>Bioware released a new Premium Module for the RPG <a href="http://happypenguin.org/show?Neverwinter%20Nights%20Client">Neverwinter Nights</a>. Description from the homepage:
</p><blockquote><em>As you crest a hill on your noble warhorse, a bleak sight unfolds before you: Cormyr, the land of your birth, is scarred and ravaged by a creeping blight. Once-green fields lie brown and dead, and smoke rises from farms and village homesteads that have fallen ramshackle and decrepit.
<p>You have returned to your home with intentions of aiding your family in rebuilding their lives from the ashes of wars past. Yet though peace seems to have finally returned to this troubled land, outlaws still lurk in the wilds and a strange silence has descended over the Hullack forest...a silence that warns of encroaching darkness.
<ul>Features
<li>Explore the Kingdom of Cormyr on fully ride-able horses
<li>Compete in tournaments and joust against thundering opponents
<li>The first premium module to showcase flowing cloaks, tabards and long coats
<li>Extensive new art, new creatures, two new tile-sets and an enhanced version of the Tir Nan’Og tile-set (a massive 1200+ tile rural/castle/village set)
<li>Features a new prestige class, the Purple Dragon Knight
<li>Starting level 6 or 7, with new characters leveled automatically
<li>A rich, 18-20 hour single-player experience built around an engrossing storyline from esteemed community developer DLA

The Help Wanted GotM of this months is still <a href="http://windstille.berlios.de">Windstille</a>, a 2D sidescrolling
jump'n shoot/adventure game hybrid set in a colonie on a terraformed
planet far away from earth. The players task in this game is to find
jobs and finish missions to earn money and make a living.
Windstille has now been Help Wanted GotM for one month so its time to
look back at was has been done and what still needs to be done. An
overview over the stuff that got done first:
<ul>
<li>TTF font support, together with all kinds of font effects
<li>3D sprites and a Blender exporter for them
<li>a
few <a
href="http://pingus.seul.org/~grumbel/tmp/windstille-yagor-2005-07-10-1.png">3d models</a> of important characters
<li>major code cleanup
<li>mostly switched away from ClanLib, however not completly yet
<li>a 2D box-based collision engine
<li>some work on the level editor, tile-definition file parsing mostly
<li>scripting support via <a
href="http://wiki.squirrel-lang.org/">Squirrel</a>
<li>a Quake-like console with Tab-completion
<li>some work on the story, even so not much
</ul>
For more news on what is currently worked on you can visit <a
href="http://windstille.berlios.de/wiki/index.php/News">Windstille
Wiki News</a>.
Now back to the stuff that is still to be done:
<ul>
<li>level editor cleanup, while basically working, a lot of features
are missing, it is for most part Ruby based, so people familar with
that language are welcome
<li>levels design, at the moment we don't have any levels, beside some
stuff for testing, we however have some stuff drawn on paper and a
bunch of tiles to make use of
<li>3d modeling of characters and alien creatures, we have some, but need lots more
<li>rigging and animation in Blender, we have people working on it,
but some help could help
<li>sound effects, currently nobody is working on that
<li>bug fixes and bit-sized tasks, the <a
href="http://windstille.berlios.de/wiki/index.php/Jobs">Jobs Wiki
Page</a> has plenty of them, if you wanna get started pick one and work on it
<li>story work, we have a setting and a few characters, but there is
still a lot of room for additional stories, side-quest and events
<li>figure out exactly which objects and features are needed or the
first release and which aren't
</ul>
The latest development version of Windstille is available via Subversion from:
<ul>
<li>svn co svn://svn.berlios.de/windstille/trunk/

the further progress of this game and welcome newcomers, assign tasks
and such. The channel is also at all times the primary place to
discuss the development of the game, so even at non-IRC meeting times
you have a good chance to catch one of the developers:

<a href="http://www.happypenguin.org/images/bfris.jpg"><img src="http://www.happypenguin.org/images/thumbs/bfris.jpg" align=right width=200 height=150></a><a href="http://www.linuxgames.com">Linuxgames.com</a> reports that <a href="http://www.aegistech.com/projects.html">BFRIS</a>, a 3D OpenGL-based multiplayer space combat game for Linux and Windows, has gone gold, and should ship sometime in the near future.
<p>
When this occurs, Aegis Tech's BFRIS will have the distinction of being the first ever shrinkwrapped, playable-out-of-the-box game for Linux. Very cool.
<p>
This game has been in the works for at least I year, I think. Many months back, Aegis released a playable test/demo binary that demonstrated some real pretty graphics, but was awful in terms of control and stability. One hopes they've come a long way since then, and no doubt they have. I'll certainly shell out 40 bucks or whatever as soon as it's available! |
